Publisher’s Comments and Table of Contents – December 2023

| 20th December 2023

Welcome to the Appropriate Technology December 2023 issue.

In this issue of Appropriate Technology, we welcome Marianne Comparet, co-founder and Director at the International Society for Neglected Tropical Diseases, London, to our editorial board.

Andy Crump, Editorial Board member, reports on the agrifood sector which continues to make remarkable strides; it is imperative to recognise and address the hidden costs associated with these advancements. He also looks at the technological ingenuity in the supply of drinking water.

This issue features a new section on “Distributed Manufacturing in Developing Countries”; Appropriate Technology will continue to publish on this theme during 2024, following on from the previous edition’s Last Word on ‘Scaling an Internet of Production that is ready for Disaster Relief’ by Andrew Lamb, Editorial Board member. This issue’s article sets out distributed manufacturing in more detail and upcoming issues will include case studies.

We report on Prolinnova's contest for innovators focused on water management in Burkina Faso and the Zanguga community in Ghana which showcases its efforts in revitalizing "Kundunvori" biodiversity.

A noteworthy highlight in the Sand Dams Worldwide Annual Report 2022/23 is shared by David Jordan OBE, the Chairman.

Discover practical guidance on constructing a vertical aquaponic system in a step-by-step format provided by Engineering for Change.

As we bid farewell to 2023, Appropriate Technology magazine undergoes notable transformations marked by the retirement of Colin Ley and the induction of new editorial board members. On behalf of the entire team at Appropriate Technology, I extend heartfelt wishes to all our readers and their families for peace, health, happiness, and prosperity in the approaching New Year. Season's Greetings.
